The Trump administration has announced a $5 billion investment to harness artificial intelligence for solving some of science’s toughest challenges, including the root causes of chronic disease and the acceleration of new drug discovery. The initiative, which involves 15 federal agencies, will give scientists access to the Department of Energy’s supercomputers and specialized datasets to run experiments using advanced algorithms.
Michael Kratsios, the chief technology adviser to President Trump, said the effort is designed to unite agencies that typically work in separate domains under a single AI for science mission. The funding will support research into chronic disease origins, faster drug development, and longer lasting building materials. Fifteen federal agencies are involved, including the Departments of Health and Human Services, Energy, Transportation, Defense, and Interior. Microsoft has also pledged $40 million in AI computing credits over three years to support the project.
