A premier Sonoma County culinary and wine event has generated over $3.5 million to directly fund cutting-edge cancer research across the United States. The fifth annual Sonoma Epicurean, held over four days in late March, brought together celebrated chefs, vintners, and philanthropists, with every dollar raised going to laboratory scientists at leading cancer centers.
The weekend's main gala and auction, hosted at Montage Healdsburg, was emceed by ESPN anchor and cancer survivor Jay Harris. The event honored community leaders Ariel Ungerleider Kelley and Dr. Shoshana Ungerleider for their contributions to public service and healthcare. A live auction featuring exclusive travel and experience packages drove significant contributions. Top lots included a private villa stay in Costa Rica, a FIFA World Cup 2026 suite experience, a luxury trip to Spain's Costa Brava, and VIP access to a Formula 1 Grand Prix. A subsequent Fund-a-Need paddle raise helped push the total funds raised to over $3.5 million.
Since its inception in 2022, the Sonoma Epicurean event series has now raised nearly $17 million for the V Foundation for Cancer Research. The foundation directs all public donations straight to research, using a separate endowment to cover operational costs. "We are funding incredible projects both locally and nationwide," said Coury Shadyac, Chief Development Officer at the V Foundation, noting that the Bay Area alone has received $37 million across 102 grants from the organization.
Organizers have already set dates for the next gathering, scheduled for March 2027. The continued success of this event underscores a powerful community commitment to accelerating scientific discovery, with the ultimate goal of achieving more victories over cancer for patients everywhere.
