New National Index Ranks Medical Schools by Real World Health Impact
Why this is good news

This article is about a new ranking system that measures how well medical schools turn lab discoveries into real treatments for patients.

  • Measures real world impact. Before this index, medical schools were ranked mainly by research spending or publication counts. Now patients and funders can see which institutions actually convert discoveries into treatments, helping direct resources to places that deliver results.
  • Challenges outdated metrics.Traditional rankings ignored whether lab breakthroughs ever reached patients. This index shifts focus to translational performance, meaning schools are now incentivized to prioritize practical cures over just publishing papers.
  • Evaluates over 1,200 institutions. From a pool of more than 6,000 organizations, the Cure Innovation Index provides the first comprehensive look at which schools truly save lives. This transparency helps patients identify where promising treatments are most likely to emerge.
  • Rewards treatment delivery speed.By measuring how successfully discoveries become cures, the index encourages faster movement from lab to clinic. For patients waiting for new therapies, this means more pressure on schools to shorten the time between a scientific breakthrough and a treatment they can receive.

A new national ranking system has identified the institutions that are most effective at turning laboratory discoveries into treatments and cures, challenging the traditional focus on research spending alone. The Cure Innovation Index, released on April 29 by the nonprofit organization Cure, evaluated more than 1,200 eligible institutions from a pool of over 6,000 organizations involved in biomedical research and higher education.

Unlike conventional rankings that measure scientific output by volume of publications or grant dollars, this index examines translational performance: how successfully an institution moves discoveries from the lab into clinical practice and commercial products. Of the institutions evaluated, only 303 were selected and ranked across three key areas: the ability to support innovation and commercialization, the strength of research infrastructure and output, and success in converting discoveries into clinical and market ready applications.

Ohio emerged as a standout state in the analysis, ranking fifth nationally for the number of institutions included in the index and second for institutions that exceeded expectations relative to their size and resources. Among those top performers was Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED), which placed in the top 5 percent of all institutions nationally and earned the number 12 spot for impact relative to size and resources.

The index results suggest that institutions driving the future of healthcare are not always those with the largest budgets but those most effective at turning discovery into solutions. NEOMED was recognized for its expanding role in advancing research, education, and care delivery through strategic partnerships across the state, accelerating the movement of discovery into practice.

“At NEOMED, we are not simply advancing science, we are transforming it into action,” said John Langell, M.D., Ph.D., President of Northeast Ohio Medical University. “Being recognized as a national leader in translational innovation reflects our mission to develop transformational leaders who don’t just imagine the future of healthcare, they build it.”

The launch of the Cure Innovation Index provides a new tool for patients, policymakers, and researchers to identify which institutions are most effectively bridging the gap between the laboratory and the clinic. As more institutions focus on translational success, the hope is that patients will see faster access to new therapies and more efficient pathways from scientific discovery to real world treatment.
